This is embarrassing. We’re a marketing agency. We help service businesses dominate local search. And our own Google Business Profile got 15 impressions in 14 days. Zero calls. So we’re doing what we tell clients to do — auditing it publicly, fixing it on camera, and showing the receipts. If your Google Business Profile looks anything like ours did, this is the exact playbook to flip it. No theory. Just the fix.
Why is my Google Business Profile getting no impressions?
In 2026, three things kill GBP visibility — and we were guilty of all three. First, the primary category was set wrong. We had it on a generic “Marketing Agency” instead of the specific subcategory that matches what local service businesses actually search for. Google rewards specificity. We were paying the generality tax.
Second, our services list had 3 entries. Google gives you 30 slots. Empty slots tell Google you’re either inactive or undefined — neither one ranks. Third, we had zero photos posted in 60+ days. Google’s freshness clock starts at 7 days. Past 30, your visibility halves. Past 60, you’re functionally invisible. That was us.
How do I fix a Google Business Profile with low impressions?
The fix runs in 5 fields, in order. Run them all in one sitting — 45 minutes start to finish. Skip any of them and the others underperform.
Field 1: Primary category
Pick the most specific category Google offers. “Plumber” beats “Contractor.” “Estate Planning Attorney” beats “Lawyer.” If you provide 5 services, the primary category should match your highest-margin or most-searched one — not your most generic one. This is the highest-weight signal in local search. Get it wrong and nothing else matters.
Field 2: Secondary categories
Add 4 to 6 more. Most profiles have zero. Each secondary category opens you up to a new search query without diluting the primary. Pick categories that align with services you actually offer — Google flags mismatches and suspends profiles in 2026’s tightened enforcement waves.
Field 3: Services list
Fill all 30 slots if you can. Each entry should match a real service you provide, with a 1-sentence description. This list feeds Google’s AI overview and “people also search for” panels. Profiles with full lists rank for 3-5x more queries than profiles with 3 services.
Field 4: Photos
Upload 5-10 fresh photos this week. Geotag them. Add 2-3 fresh ones every month going forward. Google’s freshness signal weights heavily on photo cadence. Don’t worry about studio quality — phone photos of real work outperform stock images every time.
Field 5: Q&A self-seeding
Write 5 Q&A entries on your own profile this week. Include the questions your worst customer would ask (“How much does this cost?” “How fast can you start?” “What if I’m not happy with the work?”). If you don’t fill that section, strangers and competitors will. We’ve seen profiles get sabotaged by 3-star Q&A from people who never bought the service.
How long does it take for a Google Business Profile to recover?
From the day you finish the 5-field fix, expect 14 days for impressions to start moving and 30 days for the local 3-pack to recalibrate. We’re tracking ours publicly — week 1 is done, weeks 2 through 4 are filming now. If we don’t see a 3x impression lift by day 30, we’ll show that too. Subscribe to the Movou blog for the week-by-week receipts.
Should I post on my Google Business Profile every week?
Yes. Once a week, minimum. Google has a 7-day decay clock — go silent past that and your visibility starts dropping. The post itself doesn’t have to be elaborate. A 50-word service highlight, an offer, or a project photo with caption all count. Set a recurring 15-minute slot every Monday and never miss it. This single habit is worth more than 90% of the “advanced SEO tactics” agencies sell.
What if my GBP is still invisible after the fix?
Then you have a category mismatch problem or a duplicate listing issue. Google occasionally creates phantom duplicate profiles when business addresses change — those duplicates split your ranking signal in half. Search your business name in Google Maps and look for any profile that isn’t the one you control. If one exists, request a merge or removal through the Business Profile dashboard. This is the #2 reason “fixed” profiles still don’t rank.
Conclusion
An agency that won’t audit its own work isn’t an agency you should hire. So here’s ours. 15 impressions in 14 days. Five fields fixed in one Monday afternoon. Week-by-week tracking from here on out. If your Google Business Profile is sitting at single-digit impressions and no calls, run the same 5-field fix this week. Want us to run it for you instead?
